Filter gets clogged EVERY DAMN DAY

QUESTION:

I have a Beckett G535AG20 pump with Modular Filter Box attached and I'm having to clean the filter almost daily. What can I do to stop this ridiculous process? If I go for more than 2-3 days the pump almost stops flowing completely. Is there a pre-filter I can buy or some other solution?
For reference, this is in Seattle and my pond is about 24" at the deepest part, about 8 where the filter/pump is. It's about 1100 gallons with about a dozen fish (mostly small) a turtle, water lettuce, duckweed, hyacinths and nothing else. It appears to be just gunk and alge that is clogging it up.

ANSWER:

I'm not familiar with the filter you are using. It's possible part of your problem is a filter that is too small. Check out this site: http://www.flash.net/~blhill/pages/pond.html Read up on filtration. Feel free to ask as many questions as you need. If your filter seem adaquate after reading, then your problem is probably too many dissolved organic carbons building up in the water allowing masses of string algae to grow and clog your intake. Change one third of the water twice a week for a couple of weeks and then change one third once a week from then on. The string algae will die slowly as it is starved. For a while this will clog your intake even more as it breaks loose. You can rake out quite a bit. Eventually, you will have just small amounts that won't cause any clogs.
