Allergy problems in new rental house.

QUESTION:

I recently moved into a rental house and my allergies have gotten really bad. I was considering having the duct work cleaned and the carpet cleaned. Does anyone have any advice on how to reduce allergy problems that are caused by an old house which is very dusty and probably a lot of molds in the house.

ANSWER:

After getting the duct work and carpet cleaned, buy filters for all the registers (heat and cold air). Consider spending $30 for a better furnace filter (3M) or a few hundred for an electronic/ electrostatic one. If both are outside your price range, make sure your furnace filter has pleats like an accordian so it will pick up more dust.
Vaccuum daily, Dust your furnace and keep the basement cleaned. Replace or dust filters regularly (monthly).
