QUESTION:I have a horrendous dust problem every winter when the furnace fires
up. The humidity is <50% and I like it dry as otherwise there is a lot of
condensation on the glass windows and I have lots of those. I live alone and am a rat pack so until I get rid of the junk.
Vacuuming is not going to solve the problem. My house is 1200 sq ft
on one level and has a full undeveloped basement of the same size. The 20 x 25 fiberglass furnace filter has been changed regularly
although the ones discarded look quite clean, in fact as clean as the
new one. There is a fresh air intake duct to the return air ducting.
The furnace has a separate air supply from the outside. The outside city air is clean by any standard. There is very little
air pollution either particulate or chemical. Looks like I need an electrostatic furnace air filter. What is a
good brand and what am I looking at in price. I can install it
myself. Will the electrostatic filter eventually extract all the dust
that had accummulated in my house for the past 20 years?
ANSWER: Depends...if your existing ductwork can take it, Home Depot, and TheWEB
filter, 3 phase. About $25.
If not, and the duct wil not handle the added resistance of that filter, a
Climatec 1500....about $75-100 from a contractor that sells them....these
are NOT cheap.
