QUESTION:Had a problem with my boiler recently whereas the hot water heater in my
garage froze up and broke as a result of the recent cold weather coupled
with the fact that some idiot (guess who) left the garage door open one
night. I took it all apart and soldered up the broken pipes without too much
problem, but I want to ensure that it doesn't ever happen again. (I can tell
you that this was not the best New Years day that I have had). The question is this, is there a special type of antifreeze that I can put
in the boiler or will any autombile type antifreeze work for this
application.
ANSWER: When we winterized our cabin in northern Pa, we used a 50/50 automotive
antifreeze/water mix. The temp has been down waaayy below zero and it
still works fine. We disconnected any feeds from the potable water system so the only
way to add make-up is to manually pump it in (I use a drill pump). This
pretty much eliminates any chance of contaminating the fresh water
system.
