QUESTION:Have an 8 year old boiler. It is used for heating baaseboards and also hot water.I Have just cleaned the chimeney but when i took the exhaust vent off there was a hard kind of somthing inside the boiler its gritty and if i chip at it with a screw driver it seems to loosen up intoo tiny rocks.the problem is that I cant get my hand in there to remove it all.First of all what is that stuffcan it harm anything and is ther any way i can get to the back of the boiler to remove it .I already have it shut downso it wont turn on. can I remove the bolts holding the swing door on the front and then remove the grit.Is there any thing I should be wary of?
ANSWER: I would just use a shop vac and extension tubes to get in there. There shouldn't be a need to clean the chimney unless you are burning wood. It is the creosote build up from burning wood that poses a hazard in a chimney so a vacuum should be all that you need.
