QUESTION:A friend of mine said a Boiler maker is any hard liquior added to a
glass of beer.
My husband told me it was when you chug a-lug as much beer as one can
drink.
ANSWER: That's what I always thought.
However, as some people have pointed out, Navy types tend to call the same drink
a "depth-charge". AND ... Some people don't insist on the glass being dropped in. OTOH, many others insist that the mug, whiskey and all, be drank in one draft.
Supposedly it makes a boiler out of your tummy; as the beer eases the way down
until it hits bottom, where the whiskey does all the work. That (as you point
out) allows you to drink *cheap* whiskey without tearing out your throat.
