QUESTION:We've been looking into buying a "better" furnace air filter. We notice
that the current "throw-away" filter lets a lot of fine dust particles
through the system leaving a coating of dust on everything. We also have
minor alergies to dust. The "throw-away" is obviously not working - not
enough dust collects on it to have to change it more often than every 3
months.
Recently have a salesman show me an "electrostatic air filter". I am
skeptical as there is no electrical connection required, but am impressed
with the performance claims. The Dust Fighter 95, manufactured by Dust
Free Inc. of Royse City, TX claimes to eliminate 95% of pollutants.
I'd be interested to hear from anyone with experience with this product,
or from anyone with a recommendation (must be available in Canada).
Or should I go the extra expense of an electronic filter system.
ANSWER: I'm not impressed with the electrostatic type like you refer to. I don't
think they pick up as well as claimed and they are very restrictive.
We've
had people who can't heat their house with them as they block too much
air. Best bet are the $5 pleated filters. These catch the fine particles
that the 50 cent fiberglass filters miss.
