QUESTION:I have a chimney I plan to extend into the basement. It is now just
running from the second floor, floor to the top of the roof. But it looks
like it is getting very close to the main floor's main beam. Can this be
cut, angled or "C"-ed around the chimney?
The second question, I plan to have on the first floor a small
airtight woodstove and in the basement a larger non-airtight unit in the
same chimney. Is this possible? What order must they be if it is? does
the airtight have to be on the bottom? Also have an older brick chimney
which has an oil-fired furnace connected to it. If the first plan won't
work can the larger non-air tight share the furnace's chimney?
ANSWER: A chimney generally cannot be extended DOWN.
A chimney can be offset up to 30 degrees from vertical. A 2" clearance is required to
combustibles when the chimney passes through the inside of a dwelling.

separate flue. If you had two gas applainces, they could share the same flue if sized
properly. The same goes for oil. But the gas and oil cannot be in the same flue.
