QUESTION:I'm rebuilding an old Astoria lever machine, and have successfully
pulled out and disassembled the boiler. Descaling to follow shortly.
Here's the question: It looks like the inside of the boiler has been lined, possibly
electroplated like the machine's frame. The lining has worn off in
some areas, leaving just the raw copper surface exposed. Do I need to
have the boiler completely stripped and relined? Or just stripped down
to the raw copper? Or can I just descale it and leave it alone,
partially lined and partially raw copper?
ANSWER: Boiler interior were seldom if ever lined or plated. Only the
exteriors were plated with nickel. If you descale the boler, expect to
lose a little nickel in the process.
