Disposable Furnace Filter
QUESTION:I have the same type of fan/motor and plan on also building a box for the
filters.... but I plan on two two-stage filters (on two sides of the box).
I plan on putting an washable electrostatic in front of a good quality
disposable furnace filter.
ANSWER: Something to remember about the electrostatic filters.
They take a coarse prefilter. (keeps out the cat hair and other fibers that
go *bang* when they hit the electrostatic filter. The velocity through the electrostatic filter needs to be low enough for the
filter to work effectively. My furnace in the house has one big 2 foot by over 3 foot long electrostatic
filter. I think it's about 8 inches thick, but it really needs a bit of a
redesign. Instead of the little charge wires it needs small plates similar
to the collection plates. It also needs about twice as many collection
plates nigh onto twice the area of the ones in there. It also needs to
easily disassemble so the plates can be wiped off. With a good electrostatic filter after the prefilters and the proper
velocity, your final filters should last almost forever.
