QUESTION:I'm considering dining at the Elkridge Furnace Inn in Elkridge, Maryland.
I've heard the menu described as French or country French. The
restaurant is supposed to be in an historic house or mansion of some
sort. I'm looking at my trusty ADC maps and it looks like the Inn is
near the the border between Howard and Baltimore counties. I'd appreciate any comments on the restaurant and whether it's worth the
drive. I hope this post isn't off-topic for the group - it seems like
people here are willing to go quite a ways from DC for a good meal.
ANSWER: Your post caused a lunch bunch to try the EFI today. I haven't got
much time so this will be terse. The EFI is better than most (but not best)
of what is around in the area from south of the Baltimore Beltway (I-695)
down to and through Laurel a couple of miles on either side of Route 1 - that
of course is a relative ranking against a pretty undistinguished group of
competitors. You asked whether it was worth the trip, but you didn't say from
where. I personally wouldn't travel more than 30 minutes for this experience.
The food is varied (both at lunch and at dinner - we inspected the dinner
menu). I wouldn't call it French (country or otherwise). More like modern
eclectic - but that's OK. Prices are a bit high, but when you factor in the
veggy and starch that come with each entree, not too bad. The wine list is
decent and (for restaurants) is fairly priced. The house is a designated
historic place, dating from 1744.
So, bottom line: if you aren't far away or happen to be in the neighborhood,
give it a try.
