puzzled about furnace/airconditioner fan(s)
QUESTION:I have a house with two central air units. One for upstairs, one downstairs.
I was cleaning the exterior cooling fins, (coils whatever that's called), and had
both units shut down. I go back inside and I hear the vents blowing air. I feel
the air and it's not real hot but it's not air conditoned air either. I know
the AC is off so I go upstairs in the attic and check on the furnace. The furnace
fan is blowing. I see two "light switches" mounted on the stud next to the
furnace(s) and one is marked D/S for downstairs and the other is U/S for upstairs.
I look in the furnace and the pilot is lit but their is no row of flame like in
the winter. Any help here before I call the repair man? The fan running has been happening since the winter. I mean, when the furnace
thermostat is off, it would just come on anyway.
ANSWER: how did you turn off the air conditioners? did you pull the switches in
the back yard like where the compressor is located? if so that only
controls the compressor box. or did you turn the air cond. off from the
thermostat area, which would stop power to the compressor and also the
fan in the attic. if you have the fans running it is probably a bad
sticking fan relay or a limit switch. if this fan been running all the
time in the winter(my mothers house the fan would run for a long time
after the furnace would cut off-its suppose to run to cool the air box
down so it dont burn up- but it was her limit swith that was sticking
and it ran too long,) either case relay or limit switch would cost for
part about $20-$25, and labor which should be no more than 1/2 hr.
