QUESTION:I have an old Williams oil furnace, Model L71-84. It wont ignite anymore.
When you turn it on it seems to try to ignite for a minute or two (I can see
a faint flame inside if I open the little spring door, and it makes an
"ignitiony" sound), then shuts down. The blower still works fine, it just
seems it wont light. I have no knowledge whatsover about these units, but am
hoping I can at least narrow down the possibilities, with someones help. It
may never have been professionally serviced, or at least for a long time,
but its the backup heat and has only seen occasional use over the 3 years
I've lived here (and supposedly the previous 15 years as well.) There is oil
in the tank
ANSWER: Please call someone before we read about you in the news. If the unit hasn't
been serviced recently as you say, therein probably lies the nature of your
problem. Again, please call someone that can properly clean and service the
furnace for you. I could hazard a guess or two, but the fact that you admit to
having no knowledge whatsoever prevents that.
