QUESTION:I have a Rheem furnance. In the past few months on occasion we get a
light rubber smell whe furnace runs.
I go down to the furnace while its running and cant really smell it.
It happens only on occasion and furnace runs it normal cycle. I figure
it might be blower motor but it runs a normal cycle. It doesnt whine or
scream while running.
Just wondered how hard it s to check the belt? But belt wouldnt
cause oder would it unless it has a drag put on it from motor?
ANSWER: The belt can be the problem if it's slipping. The belt is easy to
access on most furnaces -- you just lift off one of the front covers and
there it is. (Be sure to turn off the furnace at the circuit breaker
first -- belts can take off fingers.) If the belt is stiff and glazed/shiny, or if it is visibly cracked, then
it should be replaced. Most belts are standard items that can be found
at any hardware store or HVAC parts dealer. There are other things that can cause strange smells, but the belt would
be the first to check.
