QUESTION:I have a new furnace that came with the basic cheap filter (16X25X1). The
installer said to keep it clean and it would be just as good as the more
expensive ones. I have seen filters ranging up to $15 that claim to help
clean the air. Is it worth using a differenct filter, and if so, what are some good ones.
ANSWER: The typical cheap filter doesn't do much if anything to remove fine
particles from the air stream. i.e. it will remove the cat hair but not the
cat dander. The expensive filters like the 3M Filtrete really do remove the
super-fine materials that cause so many allergy problems but at a relatively
high cost. As a compromise I've been using the pleated filters that are
commonly sold at home centers like Lowes and HD and they do seem to work as
well as the low end of the 3M line and at a better cost. The type of filter
you have is called a "throw-away" for a reason -- about the best thing you
can do with it is to throw it away.
