Furnace Repair Auburn Hills
QUESTION:I have done a stretch of AT from just N. of Harrisburg, PA, beginning at the
river, and up thru probably the remotest part of the AT in PA....on a map, look
at Rt. 11/15, runs N of Harrisburg, along the river..once across the river,
there is a parking area at a trail head of AT. This is good starting point,
but the inital ascent will work you pretty good. Once on top, it's a great
walk, albeit rocky...
camping can be done in any tent, as long as your not visible from the trail,
and as always, no campfires allowed...
ANSWER: If'n you want to go up above H'burg as tedd suggests, you will want to
get a KTA mapset (section 7 & 8), and the "Appalachian Trail Guide,
Pennsylvania" put out by KTA would be advisable. http://www.pennaweb.com/kta/ktapub.htm (These items can also be found at any local outfitter or sporting
goods store.) Section 7 & 8 is from the Susquehana River to Swatara Gap and is 33
miles. These maps have been upgraded to color now. The ridges up
there offer some nice views into the Great Valley. The hills to the
south, across the valley is part of the Reading Prong called Furnace
Hills. Might I suggest hiking between the Lehigh Gap (Palmerton, PA) and the
Schuylkill Water Gap (Port Clinton, PA). This would be section 3 & 4
of the KTA mapset, and is 40 miles long. There are some nice side
trips near Port Clinton, one of which includes the Hawk Mountain
Sanctuary, which is one of the premiere places to view raptor
migration in eastern North America. http://www.hawkmountain.org/ Since most of the hike will be on state game lands, you can camp only
in designated areas, which show up frequently enough. A word of caution, since this ridge area is relatively dry, the
springs may not be reliable this time of year. You might want to
check in with the Keystone Trail Association, or the Appachian Trail
Conference for trail alerts, and conditions.
