QUESTION:I have a 2 1/2 year old York Diamond 80 furnace (installed by builder;
house is new). It has been heating fine until recently. On a couple of occasions lately, I notice the air coming out of the
registers is much cooler than it used to be. Sometimes almost no heat
at all. I looked at the furnace and everything seems to working
properly -- the ignitor fires the gas, the vent blower and whole-house
blower motors are both turning. Sometimes the plenum above the exchanger is warm/hot, and sometimes it
is almost cool (even after the gas has been burning for a few
minutes). Does this sound like a bad heat exchanger? Or something blocking
airflow in the plenum?
ANSWER: Does your main fan run continously? Sometimes builders leave the
thermostat fan switch set to on, and the new home owners find it's drafty
once the furnace has finished its heating cycle. Just turn it to auto. Also
watch the furnace run and see if it actually completes its cycle. I don't
think there is a secondary heat exchanger on that furnace and I can't see
your primary being blocked.
But, like Ken sais, check the filter... and if there is alot of snow where
you are, check to make sure the intake pipe from the furnace outside is not
blocked with ice.
