QUESTION:I recently moved into a new (new to us) house and had a technician come out and
give me a safety checkout of the gas furnace. He seemed more concerned with
trying to get me to have my ducts cleaned than anything he found with the
actual furnace itself and I'm not sure if I should take what he said as
accurate or spend another $85.00 for a "second opinion". I am a single mother
of two and really cant afford it but would rather if spend the money if safety
is an issue. The problems he found with the furnace are: 1. Gas pressure at supply 8.5" W.C. while furnace max input pressure rating 7
"W.C. ok, furnace properly adjusted for 3.5" W.C outlet pressure at gas
valve. 2. slight smell of gas present for 3-4 minutes after furnace shuts down ,
normal due to residual gas left in burner.
Furnace is supposedly 1 year old. If these are concerns, what should somebody
be doing to correct them?
ANSWER: As far as a low gas inlet pressure, that is not really a problem as long as
the burner bar (furnace) pressure is ok.( The manufacturers installation
booklet will give you minimum and maximum inlet gas pressures)
As for the lingering smell of gas, that is a definate problem!!. I would ask
for a flue pull and spillage test to be carried out. Also make sure your
main gas valve is not allowing gas to pass.
