Gravity Furnace Repair

QUESTION:

I guess when it rains,it pours. Now we have expensive house problems. The other day,we ran out of furnace oil,so we had the tank filled yesterday. Then (before my procedure, wouldn't you know) the furnace wouldn't turn on,even after hitting reset. Called the oil company. They said don't hit reset again, you need a furnace service. Furnace repair guy came out today..big problems. First of all,the chimney is clogged with soot. Just now had that problem fixed. Secondly,we have to have all the vents cleaned out (by another company) before it's safe to run the furnace again. And...we also need a chimney cap, which we've never had.
Ah well....it's only money. Oh...and we need to board some of the more skittish cats (all of ours are indoor-only ones),as the machine that cleans the vents is extremely noisy.
Still...when you look at the big picture,it's better than cancer.

ANSWER:

My furnace is from 1920 (coal, gravity hot air), & was converted to gas in the mid-50's; commonly called an "octopus", due to how it looks - like an upside-down octopus. Fingers crossed, it still works fine. I *love* this thing, huge & ancient as it may be. Virtually noiseless - no blower, & therefore the heat is also -so- even... & I want it to work forever, because they don't make gravity hot air furnaces any more!
The *only* reason I'd want a new heating system is so that I could also have central a/c for the summers.
