QUESTION:We are looking into manufacturing propane tanks for our own use and not for
resale and would like to know where we could start getting information on
machinery, design, and manufacturing processes and any ASME and/or federal
regulations we need to follow .
ANSWER: Before you begin design of such containers, you better check with the
insurance company that has the policy on the workers in your company. The
Boiler Code is very strict and so are the insurance people regarding any
pressurized vessels. Your company may end up with insurance premiums
greater than its income. Be forewarned, pressure vessels must be within the
guide lines set forth by the Code regardless of who uses them. Buy the containers from an established OEM. Check this link to the Hartford
Insurance Co: http://www.hsb.com/ "Hartford Steam Boiler is an industry leader in the inspection of boilers,
pressure vessels and other types of equipment dating to the very beginning
of our company more than 135 years ago. Today, we provide many types of
inspection services for equipment and property, meeting the needs of
individual clients and property-casualty insurance companies:
We make jurisdictional inspections a built-in benefit of our equipment
breakdown coverage. Other insurers may not include this service, or may
charge extra for an inspection. Hartford Steam Boiler maintains a
nationwide network of inspectors who complete more than 500,000 inspections
each year. HSB customers can call our Inspection Hot Line toll free, at 1-800-333-4677 (1-800-333-INSP)." They may recommend someone who can produce what you need within the safety
guides lines set forth by the Boiler Code.
