QUESTION:We have lived here for 2.5 years, this summer we were out of town for
1 week, came back with the A/C still running and the house just STUNK!
I had to turn Off the A/C that night and open the windows, I couldn't
sleep the smell was SO bad.
I cleaned the furnace filters, I also have filters on both Cold Air
return vents, which I cleaned as well.
Then I cleaned the Electronic Furnace filter and screen. It still
stunk.
Then I opened up the cold air return and saw a bunch of junk in the
cold air return. I used a shop vac and tried to get it all out. Still
smelled.
Then, I squeezed into the cold air duct and wiped it down with
water/Lysol and a wash cloth. Areas I couldn't reach, I used a Mop to
get at.
It still stunk.
Next I sprayed a LOT of Lysol in there. It seems to be fainter now,
and I thought it was going away. However, it seems if we open the
windows in the house it gets worse again.
ANSWER: Once they're dead, they tend not to move much. Generally
speaking. Unless they're unionized, then it's kind of hard to tell (
except for the odor, as you mentioned ), because they don't move much
anyway.
Try yelling 'Break time !' or 'Free coffee !' and see if you
hear anything scurrying. That would be a union critter. Is this Grandma's room ? Was she at dinner last night ? Did
she eat ? Play with the dog any ? Nothing except getting rid of the source is going to help.
If it's 'driving you out of the house', it's not the common
'dirty socks syndrome' of a coil with bacteria. It truly sounds like
a dead thing somewhere ( no in the AC ).
