Part

QUESTION:

I can't really relate because I work for a non-profit government agency in a prison and get the same pay no matter if I'm interviewing a dangerous murderer or someone that drove without a license. I get paid the same amount if I'm exposed to Hepatitis C or TB. I don't charge extra for the pens I use or the paper I write on. I don't charge extra for the education I needed.
It would be nice if there was a service person that you could call to do certain labor, such as install a furnace or a faucet. You pay them the labor they charge and they do the job. If you want their part, then they charge their mark-up. If you want them to install your part, they charge for labor.
You sound like you really hate your job. Maybe you should consider a carreer change. I don't want you working on my furnace with so much resentment in your heart. I'd be afraid you'd make my house explode. And I'll tell you why.
You feel that your next customer should be charged in some way for everything you use in your business. The expense of keeping stock on hand, all your overhead, etc. With that attitude, you probably think the next customer "should pay" for those that mistreated you in the past.
If you think you work in hell, think about how you'd like working at a fast food place for minimum wage in a hot kitchen in the summer time. You insult those people when you say you work in hell.
When I'm standing in a urine-stenched room in the prison infirmary talking to some psychotic individual wearing a paper gown that shows his hairy butt, and I start to feel sorry for myself, I think about how much worse others have it, and I'm not thinking about my electrician who has a second home on the Eastern Shore.

ANSWER:

Yeah,he really screwed himself into 165 dollars for ten minutes work. And don't tell me about having to keep parts on hand. I had to wait five days for him to come back with the part. And don't tell me about drive time. I know where the main office is. I have to drive to work. I don't charge extra.
Maybe if I really did screw him, I'd not have to pay for a triple markup. I think I had to pay extra so he could keep his "free complimentary" refrigerator magnets in stock.
