QUESTION:I need to replace my central air (an ancient Singer unit). I've gotten
three estimates. Two of the contractors quoted me for the compressor
and coil, the third said he very rarely does a central air replacement
without doing the furnace as well. I've been looking through the posts
on this group to see what info I can get on this subject. Most have
involved furnaces towards the end of their life cycle so I'm having
trouble seeing if there are any fundamental reasons why one would
replace a furnace at the same time as the compressor and coil. I have
a furnace that is only about halfway through an expected 20 year
lifetime and want to know if there are any reasons other than: 1) greater efficiency 2) saving on labor costs (1 job instead of 2)
that I would consider doing the furnace as well?
ANSWER: Paul, it would be very important for you to do a lot of reading on the
subject of how to achieve cost effective & efficient air conditioning. If the furnace and ductwork is sized properly to deliver plenty of
airflow a furnace change may not be cost effective. You have a lot of things to check and do before you make any equipment
decisions! What you don't know at this point in time, --can cost you a small
fortune! -
