need source for gas furnace part
QUESTION:Hi, I find myself in need of a new draft inducer motor for my
goodman/janitrol gas furnace. Does anyone know of a local store that will
sell a part to me? I am not a contractor, and the few places I have called
in the yellow pages will only sell parts to contractors. I have found
internet stores that carry the part I need but I would rather not wait on
shipping.
ANSWER: A fan motor? You should be able to get a similar-spec'd motor (watts and shaft-size the most important) from a dozen sources. I'm not surprised that furnace places didn't want to touch it.
They're far more interested in the bucks from a service call,
and marking up the replacement's price. BTW - what makes you think the motor is bad? (The smell of
burnt insulation is a dead giveaway - as is crunchy grinding
of the bearings when you spin it by hand... but there are
many simpler things which can keep the motor from working:
from a bad relay contact to motor brushes to a bad overtemp
sensor.) I'd give Cashwell Appliance in Garner (a block n. of Tryon Rd.)
the first call/visit, if you are CERTAIN the motor is bad.
Bring it with you, and make a pencil rubbing of the data plate
attached to either the motor or somwwhere nearby it. They
might need that to find a substitute. It shouldn't be expensive, at all. If you can find a similar-looking unit in Sears, they also have an
extensive fiche set (Illustrated Parts Break-down listings) for
just about everything they've ever sold under an in-house brand
name. The problem, though: they'd have to order it. Be aware: many squirrel-cage fans are inseparable from their drive
motors; both are a single unit.
