Problem with York Furnace
QUESTION:I turned on my gas furnace the other night and nada!; nothing
happened. It's an older York (model UG105B3N-1B) and I've been trying
to do some trouble shooting, but I'm stumped. The fan turns on if the
thermostat (brand new) is switched to fan, but on auto, nothing
happens. The other puzzling piece is that I can't light the pilot (I did
follow the instructions). No hissing, no smell of gas when I depress
the pilot switch. Perhaps if the relay/switch on the gas valve is
bad, so the valve to the pilot will not open. And yes, the gas valve
into the furnace is turned on. I've been tinkering with it and it looks like the electrical leads
going into the main gas valve are live. I measured ~ 25V across the
leads. It also looks like there is an integral relay (?) that is part
of the gas controller where the leads enter (from the fan limit
controller). When I flip the main electrical switch on and off, there
is a clicking sound in the relay (or is it just a switch?), but
nothing else happens. It looks like this part can be unscrewed from
the main gas valve, so perhaps there's a problem with it and it can be
replaced. One more clue. I was having some intermittent problems with my AC
this past summer. Sometimes the AC would cycle on, turn off, then not
cycle on again until I flipped the thermostat switch on and off a few
times.
ANSWER: Sounds like the automatic switch on the thermostat is bad, do you have a
general wall type $25 thermostat? if so then go to hardware store and
get another one, not much to loose if you get it running with this, if
you have to call a service guy out and you tell him what you said about
having to flip the therm. switch he';s gonna change the thermostat
anyway, maybe not this time if he can get it to work, but you gonna have
to get someone out to change it eventually.
